Four Day Trips You Can Do From Denver and Be Home for Dinner

Guanella Pass

Twenty-two miles of paved byway between Georgetown and Grant, and about an hour of actual driving time if you never stop. You will stop.

• • Peak window: early to mid-September at the summit, later on the Georgetown side

• • Permit or pass: none

• • Seasonal closure: CDOT closes the pass on or about November 26 and reopens it Memorial Day weekend

• • Worth knowing: drive it Georgetown to Grant and finish on US 285, which puts you pointed home instead of back through I-70 traffic

Kenosha Pass

The postcard shot most people have seen of Colorado in the fall was probably taken here. It sits on US 285 at about 10,000 feet, which makes it the easiest true aspen drive from the south metro.

• • Peak window: mid-September

• • Permit or pass: none, but the parking lots fill early

• • The hike: the Colorado Trail crosses the highway here, so you can walk in for twenty minutes and get most of the payoff

• • Honest warning: on a peak-color Saturday, cars park along 285 and it gets genuinely unpleasant. Go on a weekday, or be there before 8 a.m.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Less driving, more walking. This is the one to pick when you want a hike rather than a windshield tour.

• • Peak window: late September into early October

• • Pass required: yes. A daily vehicle pass, or the Keep Colorado Wild Pass at $29, which residents add on at vehicle registration

• • Where to go: the Panorama Point overlook is the short version. Trails run from easy to genuinely steep

Mount Falcon Park

The closest option on this list, and the last to turn. When the high passes are already bare in mid-October, the foothills are just getting good.

• • Peak window: early to late October

• • Permit or pass: none. It is Jefferson County Open Space

• • Two trailheads: the West trailhead in Indian Hills starts you near the top. The Morrison trailhead makes you earn it with about 2,000 feet of climbing on the Castle Trail

• • If Mount Falcon is full, the same October window applies to Deer Creek Canyon and the Ken Caryl trails a few minutes from home

What You Actually Have to Reserve, and By When

This is the part most fall color guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether your trip happens.

• • Rocky Mountain National Park timed entry: the Bear Lake Road corridor permit runs 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October 19. The rest-of-park permit runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October 13. September permits were released August 1 at 8 a.m. Mountain Time. October permits are released September 1. There is a $2 processing fee.

• • Campgrounds: most federal sites on Recreation.gov book six months out, which means peak-week September sites were claimed back in March. Cancellations are the realistic path now. Set an alert rather than refreshing by hand.

• • Mountain town lodging: Crested Butte and Steamboat weekends in peak week are largely gone by August. Midweek usually is not. This is the single easiest trade to make.

• • Nothing at all: Guanella Pass, Kenosha Pass and Mount Falcon. If you are reading this late, those three are still fully available to you.

If You Have a Whole Weekend

Crested Butte is still my favorite fall memory in this state. Kebler Pass, just west of town, holds one of the largest aspen groves in North America. It is a graded gravel county road, comfortable in a normal car in dry conditions, and the color there tends to hold longer than it does on the Front Range passes.

Grand Lake and Rocky Mountain National Park pair fall color with elk bugling, which is worth the drive on its own. Check the timed entry rules above before you commit to a date.

Steamboat Springs is the quiet one. It is known for skiing, so the fall trails are less crowded than anything closer to Denver, and the drive over Rabbit Ears Pass does most of the work for you.

If you want a closer overnight, Staunton State Park sits right in the middle elevation band and is under an hour from Littleton.

A Few Things I Have Learned Living Here

• • Take the weekday. The difference between a Tuesday and a Saturday at Kenosha Pass is not small. It is the difference between a good day and a parking problem.

• • Fill up before you climb. Gas is cheaper down here and stations are sparse once you are past Bailey or Georgetown.

• • Layers, not a jacket. A 75-degree afternoon in Littleton can be 38 degrees at the Guanella summit at 7 a.m.

• • Check the road, not just the forecast. COtrip will tell you about the September snow squall that the weather app will not.

• • Stop chasing peak. Some of my best fall days have been a week off peak in a place that was simply quiet. The photo is not the point.
